Birding Guides and Nature Guide iPod Apps

By Donna BesskenThe birder’s dilemma of the 21st century. Which do you prefer in your birding backpack? Your trusty birding guide or the latest Raptor download on your iPod? If you have not seen the outstanding bird photography and identification aids in the iPod app from Nature Guide, you are missing a real show. Raptors on iPhones are so accessible, just go to iTunes and download.
When will we have time to watch the birds around us if we are playing with our beautiful maps and photos on our hand-held iPods or iPhones? There are quizzes built in, answers provided. So it seems there will be no more hanging around with restless kids or spouses who can keep occupied with the fantastic photos. I wonder how long the batteries last. Do we experience some sort of withdrawal when we can no longer be in touch with the high tech versions of our birding guides?
Staying low tech in a high tech world is a challenge. This is the first time I have been tempted to put my cash out for an iPhone or an iPod. My preference is paper and pencil in the field, so there is less to destroy if the weather turns nasty or if my backpack gets dunked in the creek. Nonetheless I have been sorely tempted here by the 2009 birding applications for these techno gadgets. The closeup of the Golden Eagle took my breath away when I first saw it.
That is why birders are social creatures to some extent, We keep in touch with the latest developments and share the news with each other. I thank the blogger who sent this information to a place where I could see it too.
